    Company Description:

    Treasure Coast Shellfish, LLC is in its third year of business & is a woman-owned & operated oyster farm based in Sebastian, FL. We have a small nursery system & a 6.5-acre water column lease where we are currently in the process of expanding & installing more floating gear. The TCS farm is located on the Indian River Lagoon, the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, Treasure Coast Shellfish raises eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) as part of the growing oyster aquaculture industry on the East Coast of Florida. This past year we have more than doubled in size using about 30% of our acreage and have about 440 floating cages and have planted 550,000 oyster seeds in 2023 thus far.

    Job Description:

    The focus of the TCS Assistant Farm Manager will be to assist the Farm Manager in overseeing crews & manage all life cycles oysters & clams from seeding to harvest. This is an on-site assistant management position which requires attendance on any tide day or night year-round. This position will require 40-60 hours per week. The position is based in Sebastian, FL.

    Areas of Responsibility:

    Educating the crews on rules, policies, safety procedures & Hazard analysis & critical control points (HACCP) practices.

    Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a crew of 2-6 individuals.

    Aid in managing labor for quality of work & efficiency to ensure crops are planted, maintained, & harvested effectively.

    Farming & harvesting tasks include (but are not limited to): predator control & protection, & projecting & harvesting in an efficient & systematic manner.

    Keeping farm data records from seeding to harvest.

    Assist the farm manager in coordinating crews & equipment to maximize equipment & personnel utilization.

    Ensure farm equipment is well maintained & cared for.

    Recordkeeping for crews will be required.

    Advise Farm Manager on crops and farm management. This includes species grown, crop rotation, farming practices, inventorying, and harvest techniques.

    Work with the Senior Leadership team and Farm Manager to forecast and schedule crops for the farm, culling, packing, and shipping departments.

    Work with the Executive Team and Farm Manager to develop and facilitate the success of new policy/ technology implementation.\

    Preferred Experience but not Required:

    Education: Bachelor’s

    CPR Certified

    Scuba Certified

    Knowledgeable about Florida's Indian River Lagoon ecosystems

    Hazard analysis & critical control points Certified (HACCP)

    Compensation & Schedule:

    $45,000– $58,500 annually, commensurate with experience.

    Description of Job/opportunity text display: This is a grant funded position being co-managed by the Center for the Inland Bays and Delaware Delicious Oysters, an aquaculture farm. They will conduct oyster aquaculture, oyster reef construction, shell collection operations, presentation to the Center’s Scientific and

    Technical Advisory Committee, informal education programs, and serve as a representative of the Center to the Aquaculture industry.

    For the Center:

    For 2-3 days per week, the Project Specialist will support the Center’s Shellfish Enhancement program, which takes waste oyster shells collected from area restaurants and turns them into artificial oyster reefs in the Inland Bays. Work will include regular maintenance on the Center’s Scientific Oyster Lease, creation of artificial reef structures in our shell yard, occasional shell collection runs, support of existing reef maintenance and monitoring, and further developing and coordinating the continuing relationship between the Center and the Inland Bays aquaculture industry. The Project Specialist will report to the Center’s Science Technician on these activities.

    For Delaware Delicious Oysters:

    For 2-3 days per week, the Project Specialist will support the operations of Delaware Delicious Oysters aquaculture farm. Time of day will depend on weather and the tides–work is done in the water during low tide. Work will include record keeping and organization necessary to track oysters in their different stages of growth, planting of 200,000(+) 6mm oyster throughout the summer, which includes tumbling, sorting by size, and re-submerging for their next phase of growth, maintenance of equipment to reduce bio foul, tracking of weather conditions and water salinity and how they affect oyster growth, and working with Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control on monitoring, required reports, and inspections. Proper water shoes are required, waders are helpful during the spring until the water gets warmer. The Project Specialist will report to the owner/operator of Delaware Delicious Oysters on these activities.

    ● With or without assistance, physical ability to move trash barrels of up to 100 pounds from barrel location to truck lift gate with the assistance of proper dolly equipment and/or oyster cages up to 80 pounds with the assistance of mechanical lifts. Physical ability to dump the barrels on the pile at the collection site from the bed of the truck.

    Description of Job/opportunity text display: The video production intern will be responsible for taking our media advocacy to the next level and developing video highlights about the different farms (who are also customers of OSH) that we will serve at “The Hatchery” food truck! The intern will work directly with our marketing staff to visit different oyster farms weekly, and produce a 3-5 minute video for our social media. The video will highlight each oyster farm’s company to include their ethos, location and waters, owners, grow out methods, and unique product. The videos are intended to raise awareness of the environmental sustainability of aquaculture and connect people more closely to our working waters, so they can learn and be proud of where their shellfish comes from.

    Preferred Experience:

    •Communications or Film & Media majors strongly preferred.

    •Experience in video filming and audio

    •Experience in video editing such as Adobe, Canva, or other editing suites.

    Responsibilities:

    Applicants must be available to work ~15 hours/week, May-September. Around 60% of the time will be travel, meetings, and shooting footage, while the remainder of the time editing can be done remotely. May include occasional Saturdays for a few hours. The candidate must be willing to travel for the video shoots and have reliable transportation.

    •Research each farm and develop an engaging story/questions for the video highlight

    •Develop interview questions and preparing farm staff for what to expect

    •Travel with an OSH staff member to local oyster farms for video production

    •Record interviews and footage of each farm.

    Description of Opportunity:
    This externship is designed to provide Veterinary students -especially students of color- in their clinical year(s) with experience working with the Monterey Bay Aquarium's diverse group of animals, which includes sea otters, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates. The program seeks to increase the diversity of veterinarians involved in conservation & aquatic animal medicine.

    Students will assist veterinary and animal care staff with clinical cases, daily rounds, diagnostic & surgical procedures, participate in necropsies, and clinical pathology, as required. They will also observe & assist husbandry staff, applied water science technicians, and the sea otter rehabilitation team to facilitate a better understanding of these aspects of animal care at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The student is required to prepare and present a case report, literature review, or other topic pertinent to the Aquarium and its conservation programs at the end of the externship.

    The work environment includes, but is not limited to, behind the scenes areas and animal habitats as well as office time. It may include work in wet, slippery areas, hot and humid areas, variable temperature and weather conditions. Locations may also vary between Monterey Bay Aquarium, various off-site facilities, and field sites around Monterey Bay.

    Eligibility:

    Successful Applicants should be:

    • Currently enrolled in a veterinary program and in their clinical year(s) of veterinary studies at the time of their stay at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

  • Program Title: Aquaculture Oyster Farm Training

    DESCRIPTION OF OPPORTUNITY:

    Learn all the skills to become an oyster farmer. You could become an apprentice, which leads to a captain's license. Credentials in boating safety and food safety, allergens, and alcohol are provided.

    This program opportunity is organized by the Aquaculture Real Jobs Training Partnership led by The Education Exchange, Inc..

    During the first three weeks, participants work on their Boating safety and basic boat mechanics, oyster farming and shellfish biology, customer service skills, and earn their ServSafe Certifications. Opportunities exist to create a pathway to a year long apprenticeship that leads to a captain's license.

    For the fourth week, participants will complete a 30-hour internship to demonstrate the skills they have learned and to gain experience in the industry. The main goal of this training is to get Rhode Islanders back to work.
