  • Treasure Coast Shellfish, LLC is in its fourth year of business & is a woman-owned & operated oyster farm based in Sebastian, FL. We have a small nursery system & a 6.5-acre water column lease where we are currently in the process of expanding & installing floating more gear. The TCS farm is located on the Indian River Lagoon, the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, Treasure Coast Shellfish raises eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) as part of the growing oyster aquaculture industry on the East Coast of Florida.     Job Description:
    The focus of the TCS Assistant Farm Manager will be to assist the Farm Manager in overseeing crews & managing all life cycles oysters & clams from seeding to harvest. This is an on-site assistant management position which requires attendance on any tide day or night year-round. This position will require 45-60 hours per week. The position is based in Sebastian, FL.

    Areas of Responsibility:

    • Educating the crews on rules, policies, safety procedures & Hazard analysis & critical control points (HACCP) practices.

    • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a crew of 2-6 individuals.

    • Aid in managing labor for quality of work & efficiency to ensure crops are planted, maintained, & harvested effectively.

    • Farming & harvesting tasks include (but are not limited to) predator control & protection, & projecting & harvesting in an efficient & systematic manner.

    • Keeping farm data records from seeding to harvest.

    • Assist the farm manager in coordinating crews & equipment to maximize equipment & personnel utilization.

    • Ensure farm equipment is well maintained & cared for.

    • Recordkeeping for crews will be required.

    • Advise Farm Manager on crops and farm management. This includes species grown, crop rotation, farming practices, inventorying, and harvest techniques.

    • Work with Senior Leadership team and Farm Manager to forecast and schedule crops for the farm, culling, packing, and shipping departments.

    • Work with the Executive Team and Farm Manager to develop and facilitate the success of new policy/ technology implementation.

    Job Requirements, Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • A sincere interest in aquaculture/shellfish culture.

    • Minimum two years of shellfish experience.

    • Minimum one year of shellfish farm.

    • Minimum two years of shellfish experience with production & grow out.

    • Minimum two years of boat handling & operating experience.

    What you will be doing:

    This is a seasonal 11-month/year position to assist with a nutrition-oriented research program conducted at the Kenai Moose Research Center (MRC). Housing is provided; the employee lives on-site and is responsible for monitoring animal welfare and ensuring facilities, equipment and supplies necessary to support operations of the permanent field facility are met. The incumbent will be accountable for a variety of duties which includes providing technical support and animal care in a research environment, maintaining an inventory, ordering supplies, and maintenance and alteration of facility structures and equipment.

    The working conditions you can expect:

    The Kenai Moose Research Center is located in southcentral Alaska, 45 road miles northeast of the city of Soldotna on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge lands. The work is conducted in remote surroundings, outdoors year-round, within large enclosures where moose exhibit species-typical behaviors and forage on natural vegetation. Supplemental food is provided to animals during winter to reduce loss of body condition. The incumbent will assist with  research projects and will be primarily responsible for maintenance duties and animal husbandry at the research center.

    Who we are looking for:

    We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    • Experience working with large animals weighing at least 220 pounds (100 kg);

    • Experience collecting biological samples from live animals and preparing those samples for analysis;

    • Experience operating and maintaining ATVs and snowmobiles;

    • Basic computer data entry and understanding of Microsoft programs like Excel and Word; and

    • Experience working in remote areas and the ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair project equipment and facilities.

    Minimum Qualifications

    High school graduation or the equivalent.
    AND
    One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.

    Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

    Substitutions:
    An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
    Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.

    Special Requirements:
    Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, traveling by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs or chemicals.  Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are often full-time but may be seasonal or temporary.

    Hatchery Technicians report directly to the hatchery’s manager and work both independently and as part of a team in all aspects of larval husbandry. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

    – Daily maintenance and care of larval, indoor and outdoor nursery systems.

    – Daily culling, feeding, cleaning and microscopic inspection of shellfish at various stages.

    – Collecting water on appropriate tidal cycle, cleaning of tanks, and all associated equipment.

    Requirements:

  • The FSU Coastal & Marine Lab seeks a full-time position to serve as a Restoration Coordinator (RC), with responsibilities of closely coordinating and strengthening partnerships with local and regional stakeholders to support The Partnership for a Resilient Apalachicola Bay; serve as a lead collaborator among Florida’s Estuarine Restoration Teams; support workforce coordination and capacity building with the Conservation Corps of the Forgotten Coast; coordinate with the Apalachicola Watershed Coordination Blueprint; and identify data gaps/needs for restoration within the watershed/bay; coordinate, develop, implement, and monitor local restoration projects and convene partners to identify and purse appropriate funding opportunities for restoration. The Partnership for the Resilience of Apalachicola Bay is a community-based advisory committee charged with the implementation and evolution of the Apalachicola Bay System Ecosystem-Based Adaptive Management and Restoration Plan. This plan provides recommendations to governmental agencies responsible for oyster restoration and adaptive management in Apalachicola Bay.

    Responsibilities
    Actively engages with stakeholders to identify restoration activities that will benefit the Reserve. The Restoration Coordinator will work with Reserve staff to develop, implement, monitor, and maintain restoration projects and databases; will stay current on existing projects; and identify needs/gaps in restoration. The RC will closely work with the team developing the Apalachicola Watershed Blueprint Guide. Actively engage with the Panhandle Estuarine Restoration Team (PERT) and serve on the steering committee to support local, regional, and statewide restoration efforts with Florida’s Estuarine Restoration Teams (FLERT). Work with the Reserve Manager to develop the greenhouse site as a restoration hub. Coordinates with the Resilient Florida Program and provides info for the statewide restoration plan.

    Administration: Responsible for managing administrative tasks including collaborating with Administration and Budget staff on purchasing needs. Ensures that meeting records and files are properly maintained. Submits work plans, progress reports, and maintains information hub and relevant databases. Updates websites and story maps. Hosts and participates in monthly, quarterly, and annual meetings. Makes presentations as needed to ensure that the pubic and other agencies are aware of site-specific issues and management objectives. Assist with updates to ANERR Management Plans. Participates and provides updates at ANERR meetings including RAC.

    Partnership Engagement: Actively engage with the Conservation Corps of the Forgotten Coast, a partnership that began in 2016 to build capacity and help protect vulnerable shorelines, create habitat, and conduct resource management. This will include hosting biweekly catchup meetings and engaging the community to learn about the ecological benefits and methods of restoration used by the Reserve. Plans and assists with restoration projects and OysterCorps program to promote alternative materials. Actively engages with The Partnership for a Resilient Apalachicola Bay. Engage with group members, participate and assist with monthly meetings, summarize notes, and meet with decisionmakers, agency staff, and the public as needed. Develop an annual workplan to guide the future of the group and assist with developing a communications plan to guide media that will be produced.

    Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)

    4. Ensure vessel is running well and maintenance protocols are being met

    7. Ensure vessel meets DOH standards prior to harvests

    10. Become familiar with operating and maintaining boats and other farm-related equipment

    Qualifications:

    · Individuals must have a minimum of two years of experience running equivalent vessels

    · Must be able to maneuver and navigate a 20’-45’ boat in all weather conditions in Willapa Bay (exceptions being unsafe weather conditions)

    · Must be able to follow all state mandated product tagging protocols and paperwork corresponding to harvest

    · Individuals must be able to work flexible hours including some weekends and nights to accommodate the tide and market schedule

    · Enjoy working outdoors on the water, and be comfortable working outdoors in inclement conditions and indoor refrigerated environment

    · This is an active job and applicants should be able to regularly lift and handle 50 pounds without difficulty and be able to work in a physically challenging environment on and off the water

    · Individuals must adhere to all safety standards on the water, farm and farm facilities

    · Must be able to speak/understand English and communicate respectfully with coworkers

  • Responsibilities at VFAWC include tasks such as mussel broodstock collection, host fish collection, assisting with infestations, grow out and tagging of mussels, monitoring of released mussels, counting juveniles, and propagation system construction and maintenance. Since VFAWC is a cooperative facility, the position works closely with FWS and DWR biologists. This position will be required to design and implement both laboratory and field research in support of mussel conservation activities. Physical duties include lifting up to 50 lbs., hiking, swimming, SCUBA, boat operation and maintenance, working outdoors in challenging environments, and various other physical demands related to being a field biologist and working at a hatchery. Work is often conducted under trying conditions.

    Work will require independent work, and frequent communication and collaboration with other project personnel and the public. Occasional supervision of others in the lab and field is necessary. Periodic overnight travel and work on weekends and holidays is required. Work in excess of 40 hours per week may be required during periods of heavy workloads. Applicant also must be comfortable meeting and working with the public, and coordinating with federal and state natural resource agencies and related NGOs. The position also involves office-related tasks such as data entry/management and analysis, specimen ID, and report writing.

    Experience in conservation aquaculture preferably with freshwater mussels

    Experience working with freshwater mussels and/or fish propagation

    SCUBA certification or ability to obtain

    Boater safety or ability to obtain

    VA driver’s license or ability to obtain

    Preferred Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in fisheries or wildlife management, environmental science or related field with demonstrated experience in conservation aquaculture preferably with freshwater mussels

    Prior experience with freshwater mussels other than propagation, such as field-related work

    Experience leading independent research projects

    Experience leading field crews and/or managing aquaculture facilities or labs
